‘Cloak of Deception’ by James Luceno

Okay, this was a buisy weekend for the Crissman family.  We went to a school auction in Owego on Saturday and did a pretty good job bidding.  It made for a long day, however.  We ended up getting up at 8:30 in the morning (which was early considering Heather worked till 2 a.m. the night before), went out to Owego, and got registered.  I’ve been to an auction before, but I’ve never been the bidder, so it was an interesting experience to be the person bidding and it was actually pretty exciting to do.  Anyway, because of how much we got (because it was cheap, like two student desks for $2 a piece), we had to come back to Vestal and rent a U-Haul and take everything to our house, unload it, and then return the U-Haul.  All in all, we ended up working and moving “stuff” until about 2:30 in the afternoon.  What a day!

Today we made it officially “The Sopranos” day at the Crissman house.  We watched the last two discs of the last season of “The Sopranos” all afternoon long and then watched the brand new show tonight.  What a season opener!  Man, we’re hooked already and can’t wait till the next show.

Okay, so onto our book discussion of “Cloak of Deception” written by James Luceno.  The first segment will be about Chapters 1 through 5, as it takes place on one planet and can be summed up easily.  There will be no character reviews of the books and once we’ve reviewed each chapter/section there will be one overall book review.  So, onto the review of the section of the book titled “Dorvalla”……

“Cloak of Deception” by James Luceno

Characters:  Commander Daultay Dofine, Captain Cohl, Boiny, Rella, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Viceroy Nute Gunray

Ships:  The Revenue, The Hawkbat, The Acquisitor

–  Captain Cohl leads a band of rebels called the Nebulla Front on an attack of a Federation ship called The Revenue that is in orbit around the planet of Dorvalla.  Commander Daultay Dofine is in charge of the ship and it’s special cargo called ingots.  Captain Cohl and a band from the Nebula Front, including his direct sub-ordinates Boiny and Rella stow away on a cargo container to get aboard The Revenue.  Once aboard they create complete havock!!!  They get to the bridge aboard The Revenue and tell Commander Dofine to show them where the ingots are aboard the ship in return for his life.  Dofine concurs and then evacuates to an escape pod.  Dofine had called for help from The Acquisitor and amongst the battle, The Acquisitor had arrived.  On their way out of The Revenue, they were discovered by Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon who were tailing Captain Cohl for the Jedi Council.  Meanwhile, Dofine had informed the captain of The Inquisitor that Captain Cohl was trying to make off with the ingots and make it Cohl’s ship, The Hawkbat.  Dofine gets picked up by The Acquisitor and immediately contacts Viceroy Nute Gunray to inform him of he loss of the cargo.  In the meantime, The Hawkbat and The Acquisitor engage in a battle where it appears The Hawkbat is destroyed.  The two jedi are left at the end of the battle trying to decipher what they have witnessed.  The jedi are leary about whether Cohl really is dead.
