The Hutts

One of the most powerful “families” in the Jedi universe is the Hutt family.  This family played a role in The Phantom Menace and a much more powerful role than I think the movie emphasizes and I believe their roles get emphasized more in many of the Star Wars video games.

So I believe that the Hutts have more control over the universe than Lucas really writes into the scripts.  Jabba becomes famous later on for having control over the bounty hunters and in this movie, the Hutts seem to have absolute control over the pod races.  I think about the emergence of the Hutts in all of the movies and ultimately, the Hutt movies seems to have a significant impact on the whole storyline even though it’s only considered a back drop to the story.  I really enjoy the fact that in this movie we actually get to see a Hutt moving around instead of being a big “blob” of fat like Jabba becomes later on.  Again, the significance of the Hutts is  if they didn’t have the pod races, then Qui Gon would never have won enough money to get off Tattoine to get to Coruscant to continue the battle for Naboo.  He would have never have won Anakin’s freedom, Anakin wouldn’t have studied the Jedi arts, dropped ot the Dark Side, become Darth Vader, had children with Padme, had Luke and Leia born, had been betrayed by his son and destroyed The Emporer.  Okay, I think that all made sense, but think about the “domino affect” of one Star Wars character.  Talk about simbiotic relationships!
