The Trade Federation

Okay, I’m beginning to realize that I need to have a pattern to what I’m going to talk about.  So, I thought that I should start at the beginning.  I want to go back to the beginning of the Star Wars sextology (I think that’s what you would call it) and I want to talk about the beginning of The Phantom Menace.

I specifically want to talk about the “Trade Federation”.  I don’t understand the set-up for this movie.  We get introduced to the Trade Federation and get told they have a Trade Franchise and they’re trying to block the Republic from trading with the people from Naboo.  As I have contemplated this story line over the years I had many questions.  My first question is, what do the people have on Naboo that everyone else wants?  I could understand if there was a nova storage on the planet or that people liked to vacation on Naboo, but we never get told why The Senate thinks that Naboo is so important.  More importantly why did the Trade Federation decide to block this planet in particular?  I just don’t understand the relationship within the beginning of this movie.

This brings me to my next question.  How did the Trade Federation and the Emporer hook up?  I’m sure it’s explained in a book somewhere that I have not read (I plan on starting to get caught up with my reading this summer as I have been in Master’s School for the past two years).  But isn’t the Trade Federation just dumb?  Why would you follow a guy that you call master and never see his face.  Better yet, you simply don’t see him at all!  You simply see holograms of the man.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but if I’m going to follow someone, I want to see them face to face!  Better yet, he has that much control that he forces them to create this blockade?  I really am not sure I really buy this concept.

I really don’t understand the Trade Federation’s reliance on robots.  I understand the storyline in Phantom Menace in that the Trade Federation is completely reliant on robots to do everything for them.  However, don’t you think that by the time of Attack of the Clones they would have said to themselves that robots are just a bad idea?  Maybe they’re just not a smart species and maybe I just don’t get why they are so dependent on robots.  Then again, none of us have robots that do everything for us, so maybe we don’t understand what it would be like.

Understand something.  I LOVE the Star Wars films, so these criticisms are meant to be read in some gest.  I don’t really take these criticisms seriously and again, George, if you’re really reading this, I’m trying to inspire thought in some of the minds of Star Wars fans.  I don’t expect there to be definitive answers to these questions.  I just think of these ideas and expect others to read this blog and add any comments they may have.  I know, I think too much when I watch these films.  But, I think I’m part philosopher, so I can’t help it!
