Revenge of The Sith
Okay, so I’ll be the first honest person on the web with this blog and say that I’ve already seen Revenge of The Sith four times. I pretty much have memorized the movie and I’ve even taken to looking at the backgrounds as I watched the movie the third and fourth time. I really don’t understand some Star Wars fans out there. For some reason there are Star Wars fans that believe that the most recent trilogy (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of The Sith) don’t live up to the oringinal trilogy’s expectations.
I don’t believe this to be true and I think people need to stop comparing. I believe the Star Wars fans that slam down the latest trilogy believe that the actors in the original series were simply better actors. I tend to disagree. I believe the WORST actor in the original series was Mark Hammil. He acted like a little kid all the time and I believe his struggle with the Dark Side and his struggle with who his father was is simply not believable. I believe that Mark Hammil was simply the wrong person to play Luke Skywalker. Luke needed to be stronger than Anakin, not weaker. If you watch the six Star Wars movies in order when they come out on DVD, I believe that you will find that Hammil’s weak performance makes him look weaker than Hayden Christensen and supposedly Luke was able to deny the Dark Side where Anakin was not. I simply do not buy that concept anymore based on the acting performances given. Not only that, but what about Carrie Fisher? Did anyone notice that Carrie Fisher never had an acting career before Star Wars began and she had an even worse one when it ended? What about her role in the movie The Blues Brothers? She just didn’t pull off the psycho girlfriend role very well.
But, putting that all aside I do believe that the two trilogies should not be compared. Let’s face it folks, technology has made a huge jump from the first trilogy to the second. Society has taken a huge jump as well. Look at the first Star Wars film, A New Hope. That film had absolutely no critical acclaim outside the United States. However, it broke box office records in the US. Now, the current movie is trying hard to break box office records in the US, but really isn’t achieving that goal and is more popular in the rest of the world than in the United States. I just think that the two trilogies have to be looked at for what they are. They are two seperate trilogies that were produced and directed in two completely different times in World history and in two different technological levels.
Now, with that said, how was Revenge of the Sith? One word answer, AWESOME!!! I really don’t care what the critics say and I really don’t care what all the “mainstream” Star Wars fans think. I think this movie was awesome! My father pointed out something this past weekend when we went to see the movie that I had never thought about before. He looked at me during the final scenes and said, “you know, I know all these charcters live through these fight scenes. I am still intrigued by their outcome, however.” I think that really sums it up. You know what is going to happen in this movie, yet you are compelled to watch it anyway because there is that remaining hope in your mind. I have to admit there aremany things that have gone through my mind each of the four times I’ve watched the movie. I keep saying that Anakin won’t turn to the Dark Side and cut off Mace Windu’s hands. I keep saying the Clones won’t turn on the Jedi and kill them off. But, inevitably it happens anyway and I become disconcerted. I think George Lucas is a genious ( a Blog for a different time) and I believe that he created one of the best Star Wars scenes in this past movie. It doesn’t get any better than Yoda squaring off against Darth Sidious in the senate chamber. Doesn’t anyone see the symbolism here?! The Newly formed Galactice Senate (that will later fall apart) has it’s start with Yoda and the Emporer fighting in the chambers where democracy began. I really think that Lucas really tries to send the message home, I just think too many people are too stupid to see the symbolism. Star Wars fans, open your eyes!
I agree that Lucas isn’t always consistant with his story line. However, I do believe that Revenge of The Sith is a great movie. Ultimately, I don’t think it’s better than The Empire Strikes Back, but that’s for different reasons. Let’s face it, every Star Wars fan was on the edge of their seats when they heard those infamous words “Luke, I am your father!” Can’t beat that climax. However, I believe Lucas does something completely different! Instead he gets us to be involved in a movie that we already know the outcome of. That takes true talent and that is why George Lucas is such a brilliant man.
